Getting Ready to Sail

With less than 50 days until my Canadian cruise on the Carnival Venezia — it’s time to get organized! Here’s a compact checklist and ideas I use (and constantly update) to prepare myself and any family or friends I’m traveling with so we can make the most of the trip.

Before I go

  • Join communities: I follow Facebook ship/itinerary groups and the Cruise Critic roll call for tips, meetups, and real-time advice. I search “Carnival Venezia Canadian cruise” + sail date.
  • Read recent reviews: I check Cruise Critic forums and recent Facebook posts for ship-specific tips (embarkation, dining, shows, specialty restaurants).
  • Check the ship app & Carnival site: I complete online check-in, review the daily schedule, muster drill info, and shore excursion options.
  • Travel insurance: I confirm coverage for medical issues, cancellations, and excursions.
  • Health & documents:
    • I verify my passport is valid (and meets Canada/return rules).
    • I print and save digital copies of passports, boarding passes, booking numbers, travel insurance, and emergency contacts.
    • I confirm any required visas or eTA and vaccination requirements.
    • I keep health meds in original containers and pack a small first-aid kit.
  • Money & communications:
    • I notify my bank/credit cards of my travel dates.
    • I carry a small amount of Canadian cash for tips, snacks, and small purchases.
    • I consider an international phone plan or portable Wi‑Fi for shore days.
  • Timing & logistics:
    • I plan airport transfers and any pre/post-cruise hotels.
    • I confirm luggage tags from Carnival and the recommended arrival window for checked bags.
    • I print/photocopy key documents and store digital copies in email/cloud.

Packing essentials

  • Documents: passport, boarding docs, insurance, IDs, credit cards, medical info.
    • Some countries are very specific about passport requirements. Make sure yours does not expire within six months.
  • Clothes: layers for variable Canadian coastal weather — light sweaters, a waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and one dressier outfit for formal nights.
  • Shore/day-pack: reusable water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, portable battery, ziplock for wet items.
  • Toiletries & meds: prescription meds, motion-sickness remedies, small laundry kit, travel-size toiletries (observe liquids rules).
  • Electronics: phone charger, plug adapter (if needed), camera, extra memory card.
  • Misc: binoculars for whale/iceberg watching, collapsible day bag, reusable shopping bag, small umbrella.
  • Carry-on musts: change of clothes, meds, important documents, valuables, and a swimsuit (for embarkation day).

Embarkation & on-ship tips

  • I try to arrive within Carnival’s recommended window for smoother check-in.
  • I keep valuables and documents in my carry-on.
  • I attend the muster drill as soon as I board before I do anything else!
  • Download the ship app for daily schedules and bookings.
  • I book specialty restaurants and spa treatments early.
  • I budget for onboard extras (drinks, photos, specialty dining, excursions) and manage gratuities ahead of time.

Planning port days — decide what I want to do now

  • I choose whether to relax and explore independently, book Carnival shore excursions, or use reputable local operators.
  • I consider travel time from ship to sights and mobility needs; I book timed activities (like whale watching) in advance if possible.
  • I plan to be back early of the ship’s departure time to allow for unexpected delays.

Final checklist (last 7–14 days)

  • Reconfirm travel documents, online check-in, and transfer/hotel reservations.
  • Check the weather forecast for ports and adjust my packing.
  • Print boarding passes and emergency contacts; charge electronics.
  • Pack a small carry-on kit for embarkation day (documents, meds, swimsuit, change of clothes).
  • Relax and get excited — I’m almost there!
