There's something special about cruising to Canada from New York. No flights, no airport stress—just unpack once and wake up in two beautiful maritime cities. My recent five-day sailing aboard Carnival Venezia took me to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Saint John, New Brunswick. It was also one of my most challenging cruises personally, as I spent much of the trip on crutches while recovering from a knee injury. Even with a mobility challenge, I came home reminded why cruising remains one of my favorite ways to travel. Embarkation at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal If you're sailing from New York and require wheelchair assistance, here's one piece of advice I wish someone had shared before embarkation. Initially, I was told only one person could accompany me through the wheelchair assistance line. Since I was traveling with both of my senior parents, that simply wasn't practical. Rather than separating our group, I chose to make the walk through the terminal on crutches. Ironically, it ended up taking about the same amount of time. Only after boarding did another port employee explain that I had been given incorrect information. Two additional family members should have been allowed to accompany me through the assistance line. When we returned to New York, I used wheelchair assistance for disembarkation, and it was a completely different experience. The process was organized, efficient, and absolutely worth using. ✈️ Lucky Compass Travel Tip If you require wheelchair assistance, confirm boarding procedures before arriving at the terminal. If you're given conflicting information, don't hesitate to ask for clarification. Your Home Away From Home Traveling with a knee injury taught me a few things about navigating Carnival Venezia. I quickly switched from my large knee brace to a smaller brace because many seating areas, lounges, and casino aisles are fairly tight. The smaller brace made moving around the ship much easier. Despite using crutches for much of the cruise, I found Carnival Venezia manageable with a little planning. Dining Review: Great Food, Great Service & A Memorable First Night Our first evening aboard couldn't have started any better. We chose Il Viaggio, Carnival Venezia's Italian specialty restaurant, and it quickly became one of the highlights of the trip. From the moment we sat down, our server Carmen treated us like family. She was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming—exactly the kind of service that turns a great meal into a memorable experience. The food was outstanding from beginning to end, making Il Viaggio an easy recommendation for anyone sailing aboard Carnival Venezia. Later in the cruise, we also enjoyed Bonsai Sushi, thanks to casino offers, and it once again proved why it's one of Carnival's best specialty dining venues. My parents also redeemed casino offers for Steakhouse selections in the Main Dining Room, and every meal exceeded expectations. The only dining disappointment was the Lido Marketplace during lunch. Because this was a shorter five-day cruise, everyone seemed determined to do everything at once, and the buffet stayed consistently crowded. Opening additional lunch venues—or moving the pasta station to the first sea day—would have helped spread guests around the ship. Outstanding Crew Members Patrick at the Frizzante Bar quickly became one of our favorite crew members. Friendly, personable, and consistently providing excellent service, he made every visit enjoyable. Another standout was Bam from the Fun Squad. I'd sailed with her before, and somehow she was even better this time around. Her enthusiasm and ability to connect with guests made every activity more fun. One thing I did notice was that some guests seemed especially demanding toward the crew. Cruise staff work incredibly hard, often behind the scenes, to create memorable vacations. A simple "please" and "thank you" really do make a difference. Trivia: The Winning Streak Continues I managed to keep my trivia winning streak alive, taking home medals in: 90s Music TV Theme Songs TV Game Shows After winning my third medal, I gave one away to a young cruiser who had been hoping to earn one himself. Sometimes the best souvenir is making someone else's vacation a little more special. Halifax, Nova Scotia Halifax quickly became the highlight of the cruise. Although a sailing regatta temporarily closed portions of the waterfront boardwalk, the city remained welcoming and easy to explore. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic was well worth the admission price. Lunch at The Old Triangle Irish Alehouse was one of the best meals of the trip. The homemade sausage rolls were outstanding, my dad loved his pastrami sandwich, my mom thoroughly enjoyed her smoked salmon platter, and yes—the Guinness was poured perfectly. Final Thoughts This cruise reminded me that travel doesn't have to be perfect to be memorable. Even with crutches, changing weather, and a few unexpected challenges, I came home with wonderful memories, incredible meals, outstanding service, and a renewed appreciation for Atlantic Canada.
